Beer production has returned to the Cistercian monastery in Předklášteří near Tišnov after 77 years. It is currently the only monastery brewery in Moravia. The brewery is operated by the joint-stock company Klášterní pivovar Porta Coeli, in which the Cistercian convent, founded in 1230 by Constance, wife of Czech King Přemysl Otakar I, also has a stake. The new brewery was established in the former stables right next to the historic monastery brewery, where beer was last brewed in 1942.
The idea to revive the brewing tradition at the Cistercian monastery in Předklášteří came about in the summer of 2016. The group consists of 16 shareholders who have three main motivations: "Some are beer lovers and enthusiasts of its production, others were attracted by the history and the possibility of reviving a lost craft, and others have a significant relationship with the church and its buildings."
The new brewery focuses on the production of bottom-fermented beers, especially lagers. The brewery also brews specials such as the forgotten Zwickl or the so-called winter lager, i.e., the Bock style. Beer under the VORKLOSTER brand is sold in Brno and Prague in tasting pubs. Interestingly, the Benedictines of Rajhrad, who once had a brewery on their premises, are also among the customers of the monastery beer.
Monastery beer is served both on the brewery premises and, for example, in Tišnov at the Na Humpolce restaurant. In 1491, Sister Ofka Johana of Pěčivín purchased the former tavern (now a restaurant) with her own money for the monastery, along with a courtyard and tavern in Tišnov, from Lord Jan of Věž, enabling the nuns to begin operating the monastery tavern.
"We brew beer that turns even an ordinary day into a celebration."
